| Members from various crews conducted general training and familiarization on Attack 503, DTVFD's newest apparatus, which is slated to go into service August 2009.
The session started off with an hour of classroom instruction followed by an hour of hands-on participation. Firefighters learned in-detail where many of the tools, supplies, and specialty equipment will be located and in some cases used.
Some of the features of the new 2009 E-One "Classic Pumper", 4WD heavy-duty GMC include a 500 gallon per minute PTO pump; state-of-the-art emergency warning lights, sirens, and graphics; portable hydraulic powered Amkus combo-tool; 15,000 pound Warn winch; 8 kw generator; night scan scene lighting, full EMS capabilities with immobilization devices, multiple cross lays and booster lines, and 700 feet of 3" supply line.
The intended mission for the two person crew staffing the unit is to run EMS support calls, auto-accident support with minimal entrapment, regular auto fires, dumpster fires, and other localized outdoor fires.
Utilizing this smaller more agile vehicle will also allow better access to confined areas and during inclement weather where larger vehicles may not be able to reach.
Personnel staffing the unit will be certified EMTs and Driver Pump Operators. By using a small quick response crew, minimal personnel are able to run multiple support calls while freeing up other valuable resources like the Engines, Tanker, and Ladder Trucks to respond to fire and rescue calls of a more critical nature.
