| On Saturday April 18th 2009, team "DTVFD" joined over 800 others who turned out at Hylton High School for the Second Annual Kyle R. Wilson Memorial Walk/Run for Fitness (10k). There were family, friends, and firefighters (volunteer and career) from throughout the area on this perfect day. Everyone joined together to celebrate the life of Kyle.
The walk/run started at the Hylton High School athletic fields, and proceeded up Spriggs Road towards Hoadly Road. At the turn-around, everyone made their way to Minnieville Road and back to the high school stadium. There was a greater turnout of runners this year to say the least. There were also many water stations along the route with refreshments from Moe's, Amici's and Hooter's at the finish line.
Bob Wilson, Kyle's father, spoke at the end of the walk/run and thanked everyone for coming out to the walk/run and celebrate the memory of his son.
All proceeds from the 10K event will benefit the George Mason University School of Recreation, Health and Tourism Scholarship.
Wilson was 24-year-old firefighter who died a year ago in a wind-driven house blaze. He was the first line-of-duty death in the history of the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue. Wilson was assigned to Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Station 12, and passed away early on the morning of April 16, 2007. Kyle died after becoming trapped while searching for possible victims in a burning house on March Overlook Drive in Woodbridge. |
