At approximately 16:46 hrs units were dispatched to Cockpit Point Rd near Possum Point Rd for the brush fire. Responding units advised that they had a large column of smoke that could be seen from a couple of miles away. Dumfries Units including E503, Brush 503, BC 507 and AC 503 checked the dispatched area and could not gain access. The fire appeared to be in the Cherry Hill area. Brush 512 diverted to Tim's Rivershore restaraunt and started along the tracks to try and gain access. They were able to locate the fire in a remote area off of the tracks. They also advised that the terrain wasn't suitable for any apparatus and requested additional engine companies to assist. AC 503 and BC 507 arrived at Brush 512's location and determined the resources needed. BC 507 established Cherry Hill command and AC 503 became the Fire attack division. AC 503 and Brush 512's crew made there way back into the woods to start cutting lines until the arrival of additional crews. It was determined that approximately 5-6 acres were burning. Luckily, there were no major winds and as resources arrived we were able to contain the fire. Water supply was an issue and this fire was contained with fire lines and indian packs. Boat 512 was also utilized to extinguish the fire that was on the cliffs next to the river however due to tides they could not get as close as we had hoped. The tractor from the State Forestry division arrived on the scene late in the evening and cut a line around the perimeter. Additional hot spots and snags were left to cool off. Units also went back out the following morning to survey the area and make sure the fire remained contained. This was a labor intensive incident and we appreciate the help from all of the departments that were on the scene. While I don't know the exact units I do know the companies and they were, DTVFD, DCVFD, OWLVFD, Quantico Fire Department and State Forestry. If I missed anyone, I apologize, let me know and I will correct the information.
