| During afternoon training the crew on duty was alerted to a vehicle fire on Interstate 95 Northbound near the 157 mile marker. Due to the amount of calls during the day Engine 503B became first due engine to this location generally covered by Dale City VFD.
While en route to the location updates came in stating that fire was coming from under the hood and all occupants were out of the vehicle. With the help of a VDOT truck already on scene the vehicle lane was blocked and another update was given stating that the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
Upon arrival fire was evident from the engine compartment and was beginning to enter the cab portion of the vehicle. The crew pulled a hose line and were masking up as the tires began to explode. With the recruit on the nozzle and a firefighter behind him they began to knock down the fire. Other personnel began opening the doors and hood of the vehicle to allow easier access to the fire in the dash.
Interstate 95 was shut down for safety and Engine 520 arrived on scene to provide extra water if needed. The fire was extinguished quickly and the crew began cleaning up as firefighters checked on the mother and son that were in the vehicle.
The scene was then turned over to state police and the crew returned to their training. |
