At 1408 hours Engine 503 was dispatched to Interstate 95 Northbound at the 150 mile marker for a reported vehicle fire. As Engine 503 marked en-route communications had received additional information and began to dispatch more units for what was now reported to be an auto accident with entrapment and the vehicle on fire. Engine 503 arrived on-scene at 1412 hours and confirmed two people trapped with smoke and fire visible from the engine compartment. Engine 503 knocked the fire down as it was entering the passenger compartment and began to assess both patients. Upon the arrival of additional units, extrication began to remove the patients from the vehicle. Engine 503 and Wagon 510 assisted Rescue 502 with the extrication. Wagon 503 handled the landing zones for the helicopters. Battalion 507 (Capt. Nanna) had 95 command. Medic 553, Medic 552 and Ambulance 503 were on-scene to treat the critically injured patients. The passenger was removed from the vehicle after approximatly 30 minutes and was flown by helicopter to the trauma center. Unfortunately the driver succumbed to his injuries prior to being extricated from the vehicle. Engine 503 cleared the scene at 1603 hours, Rescue 502 remained on-scene with the Virginia State Police until 1649 hours.
