| On Saturday, September 10th, DTVFD members of Crew 1 donned pink shirts in support of Alyssa. Alyssa is the daughter of one of their own and DTVFD firefighter Mike. Mike and his wife have been at Alyssa's side for several months through various treatments and recovery periods as she fights childhood leukemia.
Lieutenant Frye mentioned that Mike was supposed to be back today and that they were throwing a Bar-B-Que luncheon for Alyssa and the family. Unfortunately the family could not make it to the luncheon.
The family has gone through many ups and downs since Alyssa's diagnosis. "We are amazed when we see Mike because he somehow always has a smile on his face", stated another member. "We totally understand if Mike can not be here and everyone here knows family is number one" stated Sergeant Santiago. Mike who is an Active Duty Staff NCO with the Army nearby rarely misses a duty unless he has to. "We can not imagine what [the family] must be going through but we are here if they need us", stated another member that asked not to be identified.
The crew had special t-shirts printed in Alyssa's honor and wore them this weekend to show their support for her courage and strength. It's not too often that you see firefighters wearing pink but for Alyssa not one person hesitated.
Best wishes go out to Mike and his family… we are praying for Alyssa's full recovery very soon! |
