Our very own Sgt. Angel Santiago and FF Gabby Jennings were engaged today while visiting Walmart. "This is a special place for us and now its a special day," said Gabby. Angel then smartly quipped: "I agree, and since the ring is still on layaway it made perfect sense to ask her to marry me while we were here visiting it". He further stated: "I am really a romantic at heart." We at DTVFD couldn't agree more. The happy couple met at Walmart while shopping last fall at 2am. They plan on getting married next summer at Station 3 fire in Triangle, VA. STANDARD DISCLAIMER: This story and all of its contents are meant in good humor. Engine 503B was quickly dispatched for a water rescue in the area of Possum Point Rd. and Quantico Creek. E503B and Battalion Chief 507 responded to the Dominion Power facility to gain a visual on the river. Soon afterwards, Charles County, MD Boat 4 located and extracted the victim and took them to the shore. The rest of Saturday progressed with little calls. Sunday morning came and there was training was scheduled for Crew 2. The morning began with getting all the equipment needed and briefing the crew on what was going to happen. Two smoke machines and a training house were used to simulate arriving on the scene of a single story wood frame home with smoke showing. Firefighters and recruits from Crew 2 practiced advancing charged hose lines, search and rescue, laddering a structure, and quick egress. Half way through the 4th evolution E503B was dispatched for an OB call. Soon after arrival crews delivered a healthy baby boy. After the remainder of training and some minor auto accidents and sickness calls, the excitement of Crew 2's busy weekend came to an end. Training began with classroom instruction and discussion which was followed with hands on application on several different models and makes of vehicles. Firefighters reviewed the basics, various extrication equipment, single and multiple vehicle scenarios, alternative methods and more importantly, working together as a team rather than individual departments. Thank you to CDVFD and OWLVFD for bringing Rescue 502 and 506 to this training event. Wed, 12 Oct 2011 20:53:10 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=254 Townhouse Fire in Box 1207 http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=253 At 0100, on Friday, October 07, units were dispatched to a townhouse fire in the 14000 block of Winding Loop in Woodbridge. OWL Engine 512 marked on the scene with fire on side A of a three level end unit townhouse. E512 held at the door and fought the fire while waiting for additional units. Engine 523 arrived moments later and proceeded with a line to side C where they encountered heavy fire in the basement extending to the first floor. Battalion 505 and 506 arrived on the scene and established Winding Loop Command at 0105. Both units battled the fire while Rescue 510 and Tower 512 conducted interior searches and E510 assumed the RIT assignment. The fire was knocked down on both levels within minutes of arrival. FM529 and the gas company were requested to assist with the scene. Due to the interior damage to the floor joist, units restricted personnel movement on the first floor and held the attack lines in-place during overhaul to accessible areas. Preliminary reports suspect that the home was vacant at the time of the fire and possibly inhabited by vagrants. At the time of this posting the Fire Marshal was still on the scene conducting an investigation and command was releasing other units as they became ready. Earlier in the day it was reported that units were in the area for a possible outside gas leak but the calls were unrelated according to officials on the scene. More details and photos of the call will be posted as they become available. Fri, 07 Oct 2011 06:07:06 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=253 Crew wears pink for Alyssa http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=252 On Saturday, September 10th, DTVFD members of Crew 1 donned pink shirts in support of Alyssa. Alyssa is the daughter of one of their own and DTVFD firefighter Mike. Mike and his wife have been at Alyssa's side for several months through various treatments and recovery periods as she fights childhood leukemia. Lieutenant Frye mentioned that Mike was supposed to be back today and that they were throwing a Bar-B-Que luncheon for Alyssa and the family. Unfortunately the family could not make it to the luncheon. The family has gone through many ups and downs since Alyssa's diagnosis. "We are amazed when we see Mike because he somehow always has a smile on his face", stated another member. "We totally understand if Mike can not be here and everyone here knows family is number one" stated Sergeant Santiago. Mike who is an Active Duty Staff NCO with the Army nearby rarely misses a duty unless he has to. "We can not imagine what [the family] must be going through but we are here if they need us", stated another member that asked not to be identified. The crew had special t-shirts printed in Alyssa's honor and wore them this weekend to show their support for her courage and strength. It's not too often that you see firefighters wearing pink but for Alyssa not one person hesitated. Best wishes go out to Mike and his family… we are praying for Alyssa's full recovery very soon! The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle which was found overturned after striking a tree. Engine 503B along with Coles District VFD and Quantico Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the incident and assisted with extrication of a female patient. Helicopters were requested for patient transports. The passenger was flown to a nearby trauma center and is expected to recover. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Wed, 07 Sep 2011 09:43:51 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=250 Working Fire on Dumfries Road http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=249 On August 29th around 7:30 PM on Monday, Engine Companies 3 and 23 were dispatched to a house fire off Dumfries Road near Country Club Road. While responding units were updated of multiple calls coming in to PSCC, a black column could be seen from the intersection of Jeff Davis and 234. Police were first on scene and stated that there was active fire coming from the windows. Engine 523 was the first supression unit to arrive and confirmed a working fire with fire showing from all sides. A defensive attack was made by the crew from Engine 523 while Engine 506 and Engine 503 arrived on scene and established a water supply. Once established, deck guns from E506 and E523 were placed in service. As the deck guns were getting a good knock on the fire another handline and a monitor were put to work on the Alpha / Bravo side. E523 and E503 personnel made entry into the structure with Truck 513 personnel and began hitting several deep seated fires. Chief 503 had Dumfries Road shut down and Tanker 503 set up another water supply using its 2,000 gallon supply. The fire was knocked down with good teamwork from all units on the scene and the Fire Marshall was called to investigate the fire. DTVFD companies remained on scene to assist the FM with lighting and hot spots. Around 10:00 PM all units cleared the scene and the FM remained on scene for the duration of the night. Wed, 07 Sep 2011 09:44:44 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=249 Accident Summons HazMat Crew http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=248 On Friday August 26th, at 8:38 P.M., Engine 503B was dispatched to a single vehicle accident at the intersection of Jefferson Davis Highway and Powells Creek Boulevard. The truck driver stated that he lost control of the tractor trailer which ran into a telephone pole. The location of the impact caused both saddle tanks to rupture. Hazardous Materiels Support Unit 506 was dispatched to help contain the spill of diesel fuel. No injuries were sustained in the accident and the material did not effect the local environment. Engine 503B was on scene for approximately three hours to help with clean up and spill-recovery efforts. Thu, 01 Sep 2011 18:04:46 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=248 Outside Fire in 23 Box http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=247 On Wednesday morning as the shift came to an end, Engine 523 was dispatched at 0559 for an outside fire in the 16000 block of Radburn Street. Dispatch supplements indicated that a small tree was on fire several meters from some single family dwellings. Upon arrival E523 noticed smoke billowing from an elevated area separating several homes. Further investigation identified a large fallen tree that was enflamed and had been burning for several hours. A 300 foot 1 ¾ inch handline was put into to action to prevent fire spread to nearby properties and into the wooded location. The fire and overhaul was completed within the hour and the crew prevented any property loss. Due to the nature and proximity of the fire there was insufficient cause to suspect the fire as suspicious. Thu, 11 Aug 2011 19:15:55 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=247 Car Fire on I-95 South http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=246 On Saturday, July 31, after clearing an apartment fire in the 2700 block of Landings Point Loop, Engine 503B had just returned to quarters when the tones dropped for a vehicle fire on Interstate 95 South at the 150 mile marker. E503 closed the right lane of travel and made a quick attack on a late model GMC SUV. After it was determined all occupants had made it out of the vehicle, they were located a safe distance away. After being checked for injuries, they were released to Troopers by the engine crew. E503B cleared the scene after refilling with water a short time later. http://www.dumfriesfire.com/content/videos/file/VID_20110731_000634.mov Mon, 01 Aug 2011 22:58:43 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=246 Quick Save on House in 23's Area http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=245 On Saturday, Engine 523, Engine 503B, and Battalion 507 were dispatched for a house fire in the Southbridge community off of Medford Drive. Neighbors called 9-1-1 when they saw flames coming from the rear of a house, possibly on the deck. Upon arrival E523 reported smoke showing on Side C (Rear of house) and put a 1 ¾" line into action on the exterior and deck. E503 arrived a few seconds later and made entry into the house to check for extension and secure food on the stove. Within moments the fire had been extinguished by the initial attack. As BC507 and E510 arrived, BC507 soon placed all other units in-service with the fire being out. After quick ventilation and inspection of the home, a Fire Marshall was requested and units cleared as they became ready. After investigation by the FM; the fire was ruled "Undetermined". Mon, 01 Aug 2011 22:35:01 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=245 Congratulations to Brittany and Jared! http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=244 On Thursday evening, the DTVFD family grew yet again as the newest mom and dad in the department welcomed Owen Joseph, (5 lbs. 9 oz.) around 10:00 P.M. Mom, dad, and baby are reported to be doing very well. Great job guys! Best wishes go out to the Hartman family and we look forward to seeing both and greeting Owen in the near future. Fri, 22 Jul 2011 16:04:02 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=244 Busy, Busy, Sunday http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=243 Sunday, turned out to be a very eventful second half to the crew's weekend duty. After working out, staffing, and eating breakfast, the calls started coming in mid-morning. After 3 EMS calls, Engine 503 was dispatched to Leesylvania Marina for a river rescue. A small sailboat had capsized and everyone was rescued by Z531. High winds and choppy water caused quite a number of boat teams to be called out on Sunday. After clearing from the Marina, E503 joined Tower 512 at Station 3 for training. With the help of OWL's personnel, both crews honed skills in ventilation, search, and RIT Operations. Instruction was given on roof cuts, negotiating obstacles inside a structure, and "Extending a Window" when a MAYDAY is called. Upon the conclusion of training, E503 was dispatched to an assault on I-95. After clearing from the call, E503 responded back down I-95 for a reported over turned vehicle. The vehicle had flipped, but the occupant had exited the vehicle on his own, with minor injuries. As the day came to a close, E503 spent some time aboard MCB Quantico. Twice, E503 was called on to the base for fires. The first fire was in base housing near the main gate. E503 was placed in service upon arrival. In the late evening, crews once again responded to the base. This time it was for a commercial fire at Newlin Hall. E503 established a second water supply and assumed the RIT assignment upon arrival. E503 was on scene for approximately 30 minutes and then filled station 31 while Quantico units wrapped up the scene. All-in-all, the weekend kept crews on their toes and showed how DTVFD members can provide outstanding service to the citizens of Prince William County and the surrounding areas. Wed, 13 Jul 2011 14:41:34 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=243 Entrapment with Flyout on I-95 http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=242 Late Saturday night at approximately 9:47 P.M. units were dispatched to a reported BLS Auto Accident on Interstate 95 in the Northbound lanes at the 150.6 mile marker. Engine 523 and Engine 503 were dispatched along with rescue units. White en-route, units were receiving updates of a possible entrapment, and serious injuries. Battalion Chief 507 (Baum) requested specialty units (Tower 512) be added to the call and mutual aid from Quantico considering the possibility of an entrapment. Engine 503 and Engine 523 marked on scene of the auto accident norhtbound just prior to the Joplin Rd exit 150.6 mile marker. Engine 523's officer and Medic 503 confirmed they had one victim trapped. Quantico Rescue Engine 533 and Tower 512 marked on scene shortly after and began extricating the trapped victim. Medic 503 requested a Helicopter due to serious injuries to the patient sustained in the accident. Engine 523 set up a Landing Zone directly on Interstate 95 Northbound just prior to the Joplin rd overpass. Helicopter Life-EVAC 2 answered the call. Tower 512 and Rescue Engine 533 extricated the patient rapidly bound by skill and precision. The patient was then loaded onto the helicopter and was airlifted to Fairfax Hospital. Units cleared a short time after. Mon, 09 May 2011 15:16:27 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=242 3rd Alarm Townhouse Fire in Woodbridge http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=241 On Tuesday evening April 26th, Volunteers from Dumfries – Triangle V.F.D. have just started their shift for the night 16 minutes after 6:00 p.m. when a Townhouse fire was dispatched in Company 12's first due on Merseyside Drive, sending units from Dale City, Occoquan Woodbridge Lorton, Dumfries Triangle and Quantico. While units were responding to Merseyside Drive, Engine 512 arrived on scene reporting heavy smoke showing from the end row unit townhouse. Upon observing the conditions in a walk around executed by Engine 512's officer, a 2nd alarm was requested due to fire conditions spreading to the adjacent townhouse. Residents advised first arriving units that all occupants were accounted for and out of the structures. High winds and location of the fire accounted for a 3rd alarm being requested shortly after the 2nd alarm was dispatched. Truck 503 arrived as the 2nd in Truck seconds before Quantico Truck 531 arrived on scene, Truck 503 was ordered to the Bravo 1 exposure to assist Engines 510 and 513 on the 3rd Floor. Truck 503 made their way up to the 3rd floor and began pulling ceiling and opening the attic for the Engine company to extinguish the fire over head, while doing this, high wind caused conditions to deteriorate and became unbearable for interior operations to continue. Companies were then advised to evacuate the building immediately and transition over to a defensive operation. Elevated master streams and deck guns were used to get the fire under control. Crews managed to contain the fire from spreading to adjacent townhouses, containing it to only 2 Townhouses and extension into the attic of the 3rd Townhouse. 1 Firefighter from Dale City V.F.D. sustained smoke inhalation and was ground transported to Potomac Hospital, where he was later released not long after. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Prince William County Fire Marshalls office at this time. Units as far out as Manassas responded to the 3rd Alarm Townhouse fire as well as Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue, Coles District VFD, Quantico Marine Corps, City of Manassas and Stonewall Jackson VFD. Thu, 28 Apr 2011 15:09:03 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=241 Engine 503B Fills Co. 9 in Stafford http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=240 At approximately 22:30 hours, Engine 503B's crew was just getting ready to hit the sack. Tones dropped for a Unit Transfer to Stafford County. Engine 503B was called to transfer Engine Company 9 in Stafford County. Engine 503B made their way across the county line and settled in, while Stafford County units were working a House fire off of Barret Heights Rd, across from Route 610. This was a first experience for the Rookies riding on Engine 503B to see and be inside a neighboring county Station. Quantico Engine 533 relieved Engine 503B around 23:30 hours. Engine 503B returned to quarters. Link to the Fire in Stafford County can be found here. http://potomaclocal.com/news/stafford/fire-at-north-stafford-home/ Fri, 01 Apr 2011 13:37:07 GMT http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=240 Lightning Strikes House - 17 Box http://www.dumfriesfire.com/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=239 Shortly after returning from a box alarm in 12's due, Engine 523 was toned out for another structure fire in 17's due. While enroute additional information was being given that the house was struck by lightning and can smell burning inside the house with an active fire alarm. E517 arrived on scene and immediately pulled a line to the front door. Engine 513 & Engine 523 arrived on scene within seconds from each other, Engine 523 picked up 3rd due RIT assignment. Upon Engine 517's investigation, they found smoke in the basement and garage as well as a cable box on side Bravo was found blown open from the strike. Within Prince William, at least 3 major incidents were occurring at the same time. Large brush fires were reported off of Prince William Parkway, Dale Boulevard and Crest Drive. Additionally a large brush fire mid county engulfed at least one structure and damaged another. While units were on the scene of the Dale Blvd fire, BC 507 reported a column of smoke rising near American Eagle Blvd in Eagles Pointe. A Virginia Forestry Officer arrived soon after and worked with the crews to assess the area. By this time it was estimated that the fire had consumed approximately 25 to 30 acres. An ALL CALL was issued for DTVFD personnel and soon personnel reported to the stations to retrieve their gear and then to the command post where they were accounted for and put to work. Units worked on the scene until approximately 2200 hours and checked the scene throughout the rest of the evening. Battalion Chief 507 arrived just afterwards and called for a second alarm to the correct address at 17050 Capri Lane. Within moments E523's crew made a quick knock on the exterior fire and proceeded inside with a 300 foot line.
